If you or someone you love is having a hard time walking, but are not quite ready for wheelchair or powered scooter there are alternatives. You have a choice between a walker and a rollator to help you with your mobility problems. Each one of these mobility aids is designed to help you get around they just go about it in a different way.

While rollators are becoming popular as walking aids, the number one choice still seems to be the walker. This device is basically a four legged frame that the person using it must pick up and move forward with every step, while this may work well for some for other it may quickly become too much especially if they have to walk for any distance at all. Some walkers come with a set of caster wheels to make using them a bit easier and they come in two basic sizes, the average size for people up to 158 kg (350 pounds) and the bariatric model which is made for much heavier people up to 272 kg (600 pounds).

There are several different rollator types, but the basic rollator has a built in seat and has things like wheels, brakes and a basket for you to carry a few things in. The main purpose behind rollators is to help the aged walk better by providing and easier method of walking than the standard walker. The design of the rollator makes it much easier to walk as it rolls along the ground smoothly without having to pick it up at every step.

Rollators come in three wheeled versions that are small and very maneuverable which makes them very popular; they usually have some sort of pouch hanging on the front for you to carry your things in. If you live in the country where a fair amount of your walking is going to be done on grass or dirt, you need to be concerned with stability first and foremost; the four wheel rollator is made for just such a situation. These are also much better for the person who is not very steady on their feet as again the four wheels give added stability. The four wheel version comes with a basket on the front to help you carry small loads.

Much like the walker if the person who plans to use the rollator weighs in at over 136 kg (300 pounds) they are going to need the bariatric model that is specially designed and reinforced to handle the extra weight.

If you plan on walking for long distances you might want to consider buying a lightweight rollator, these units weigh anywhere from 25 to 60% less than the standard rollator making them much easier to used. If you or your loved one suffers from fatigue or just cannot handle a heavy weight you should consider buying one of the lightweight rollators to save you or your loved one unnecessary strain and stress that could lead to an injury or to just giving up on walking.

If only need a little help walking a walker might do the trick, but if you have issues with fatigue where you need to be able to sit and rest frequently you need to consider buying a rollator to make you life easier.
