Modern Mobility Scooter Batteries Now Last Much Longer

Image of Mobility Scooter Battery.

The first mobility scooters were powered by noisy petrol burning engines that meant they could only be used outside. Today these have all but been replaced by electric scooters that allow the rider to go practically anywhere inside and out so they never have to miss out on anything again. Initially mobility scooter batteries were very poor and only had a very short range which led to many people shunning them in favor of the petrol models.

Today's Batteries

Today the batteries in mobility scooters have been completely redesigned offering ranges of 20 to 30 miles or more on a full charge, making them far more popular than their smelly noisy counterpart.

Most scooters are using at least two sealed lead acid mobility scooter batteries that have enough power to move the scoters at speeds of 6.5 to 12.8 kph (4 to 8 mph) depending on the particular scooter. For the most part the batteries can be fully charged using the built in AC chargers in 8 to 10 hours making them much easier to keep fully charged and ready for use.

If you are in the market for used mobility scooters the batteries are something you should take a good look at as these can be quite expensive to buy. If you can find a good scooter that has good batteries you will save yourself a lot of problems later on.

You can have the batteries tested at any dealer who sells batteries for mobility scooters. Other things you need to be looking for when buying a used scooter are the good tyres. If they are old and worn out they can leave you stranded at the worst possible moment.

You should also take a close look at the rest of the electrical system to make sure it is in good shape. You can look at the motor to see if there are any signs of overheating and at the charger and power cords for signs of overheating or abuse. Check all of the moving parts to make sure they work properly and are not loose or about to break. This includes the axles, wheels and the tiller also if the seat swivels you need to make sure it works.

While in most areas mobility scooter insurance is not like car insurance and necessary it is still advisable to have your scooter fully covered. Since it is a motorized vehicle the possibility of an accident exists, if a judge finds that you are responsible for any injuries or damage caused as a result of the accident you can be held financially responsible. If you do not have insurance this can be devastating and take years to pay off or even force you into bankruptcy protection court.

If you are looking for a new mobility scooter and are not sure what size and style might be best for you, consider finding a place that has mobility scooters for hire. This way you can test drive several different models to see which one will fit you best and meet your needs. If you should need to rent one for your personal use make sure the one they give you has a fully charged battery before you take off out of the shop so that you do not get stranded when you are far away from a place to plug in.
